Feeling emotionally overwhelmed?
When you say you’re emotionally overwhelmed, this often means that your emotions are too intense and all-consuming to process all at once. When this happens, you feel at loss for what you feel and how to react. While feeling emotionally overwhelmed is something people normally feel, this doesn’t mean you can’t properly deal with it.
#1 Talk to someone
When you’re emotionally overwhelmed, you normally feel unmotivated, drained, and unable to do practically anything. In this circumstance, it’s best to find someone to talk to- just to release everything you’re feeling. Even when you don’t know how to say it in words, it still helps to just get it out of your chest. It’s important to have someone to talk to so that your emotions aren’t repressed.
#2 Let yourself feel your emotions
The common tendency is to avoid feeling anything – everything – so you shut it all out with distractions. While this is normal, you can’t properly deal with being overwhelmed if you don’t let yourself feel what you do. Instead of running away from your emotions, you should sit with it and take time to process what you feel. You can ask yourself questions like why you feel the way you do or what triggered it. When you let yourself feel your emotions, you’re doing your emotions a favor.
#3 Don’t believe in your thoughts
When you’re emotionally overwhelmed, it’s normal to have spiraling negative thoughts- from one thought to the other. However, just because you’re thinking about it, doesn’t mean it’s true. You need to avoid dwelling on the truth behind these thoughts when you’re emotionally overwhelmed. Your thoughts are the last place you should find comfort in as it’s the first one to attack you when you feel any type of emotion, overwhelmed included.
